ROCKERY PLANTS

The plants on this page also feature in the perennials section as they can be grown in a border as well as on a rockery. Several people who have visited our garden have been interested in rockery plants so I thought I woulds list them separately here.

Excellent ground cover plant - suit rockery too.

Foliage maroon / bronze.  Blue / mauve flowers

Flowers April / May.

Height of flowers about 9 inches  (21 cms)

 

 

CAMPANULA                                                                                                                                      

 

 

 

Low ground cover plant.  

Height - 4 / 5 inches  12 cms

Flowers June, July, August

Partial shade or full sun.  Conditions not too dry. 

 

CHIASTOPHYLLUM (VARIEGATED)                                                                                                  AVAILABLE NOW 2018

   

Hardy

Bright yellow flowers in spring - April, May on tall stems. Variegated leaves.

Height (stems) 8 / 9 inches 20 cms.  Spread 5 / 6 inches  (10 / 11 cms)

Soon covers larger area.

Good ground cover or rockery plant.

GERANIUM SANGUINEUM                                                                                                                   

   

Very reliable perennial - easy to grow.

Good ground cover - suit a rockery.

Height 8 / 9 inches (25 cms)     Spread gradually spreads over about 2 feet but may be spreading by new plantlets that can easily be separated to produce new plants.

SAXIFRAGE 'LONDON PRIDE'                                                                                                     AVAILABLE NOW 2018

   

Good for front of border or rockery

Foliage height - 6 / 7 cms

Flower stems approx 9 inches (25 cms) - pale pink flowers

Flowers early summer.

SAXIFRAGE (WHITE)                                                                                                                                

 

Excellent ground cover - front of a border or rockery plant.

Only a few cms high but in flower - stems approx 6 cms

Flowers May, June.

Individual plant has spread of only a few cms but soon spreads out over wider area as shown in photo.

SEDUM                                                                                                                                      

   

Low ground cover plant - suitable for rockery.

Height when not in flower - two / three cms

Spread will gradually root from spreading branches and cover a few square feet.  Very easy to control though - not invasive.

Maroon / bronze coloured leaves.  Pink flowers late in summer.

SEMPERVIVUM                                                                                                                                

 

 

We have one variety - maroon colour tinged with green.  Maximum diameter about 3cms. 

These like gritty, well drained soil.  Good for a rockery or containers.  As the photos show they can make very attractive displays on their own or with other varieties.
